Delicate topographical lines of vintage mining maps are my inspiration for this body of work. Added layers of translucent rice paper marked with various types of ink create an illusion of depth and connection. Although unintentional, I believe there is a subtle reference to our relationship with our planet in these pieces. Marks dancing over the surface of the map echo the energy of the spirit and natural forces that shape the land. Hand drawn lines and gestures suggest a metaphor for man’s effect on our environment. Although my intent is a meditation on beauty, its underlying melancholy might be hard to ignore.
It is my hope the viewer will find this work thought-provoking, peaceful, and contemplative.
These pieces on cradled board are particularly striking when grouped together in a three by three grid pattern using nine pieces total. The total arangement would be about 64" X 64" using a 2" space between the boards.
