The delicate lines on vintage mining maps are my inspiration for this body of work. Added layers of rice paper marked with ink create an illusion of depth and connection. There is a subtle reference to our relationship with our planet in these pieces. Marks dancing over the surface of the map echo the energy and spirit of natural forces that shape the land. Hand drawn lines and gestures suggest a metaphor for man’s effect on our environment. My intent is a meditation on beauty, still, its underlying melancholy might be hard to ignore.
It is my hope the viewer will find this work thought-provoking, peaceful, and contemplative.
These pieces on cradled board are particularly striking when grouped together in a three by three grid pattern using nine pieces total. The total arangement would be about 64" X 64" using a 2" space between the boards.
